“Mirage” at Kunstverein Braunschweig

Exhibition Text:
The word “Mirage” originates from the French verb se mirer, meaning “to mirror” or “to reflect.” It was adopted into the English language in the early 19th century and describes fascinating optical illusions created by complex atmospheric conditions, often appearing hallucinatory. The group exhibition Mirage brings together works by artists from different generations, which, at first glance, may not seem like conventional artworks. The exhibition explores diverse perceptions of art and the expectations it generates. Reflection and self-reflection are central themes, while simultaneously seeking to broaden perspectives and liberate artistic practices from the expectation of straightforwardness. Mirage embraces ambiguity as a subtle form of resistance.

Mirage marks the beginning of a new chapter at the Kunstverein, initiating a site-specific engagement with the institution’s spaces, which will also play an important role in future programming.
