COMPRESSION TIME at gokou studio, Tokyo
“COMPRESSION TIME,” curated by gokou, at gokou studio, Tokyo, 12-15/9/2024, 20-23/9/2024.
The furniture created by DODI leaves traces of people who have sat on it, giving it a presence that is more than just an object. The wrinkles and movements, the subtle changes that can be felt by pulling and stroking, seem as if the past and the future have intersected. This furniture suggests time and tells us that the past is also the future. It also quietly conveys the emptiness of the limited time we have left to live. Shaped by a unique technique of leather and urethane, this work is the very embodiment of time, reminding us of our existence and history. However, the sense of time is not limited to human beings. For example, it is said that small animals and large creatures have different senses of time depending on the speed of their heartbeat. Small animals have faster beating hearts, which require them to sense time more quickly and live in the moment. On the other hand, large organisms, whose hearts beat slower, perceive time more leisurely and perceive things in a longer span of time. This difference influences our senses, our behavior, and even our culture. From this perspective, DODI’s works are more than mere furniture; they are symbolic of the diverse ways we perceive time. They provide an opportunity to deepen our perception of time and encourage us to reflect on the nature of time.
