Von Doyle: Mad Scientist in the Digital Canvas
“Disturbing the old masters with AI”, Von Doyle is a digital artist who creates psychedelic pieces infused with madness by combining neural networks, deep learning, and deep dream codes.
Journey through the Digital Canvas: Von Doyle’s Artistic Exploration
Originally from Montréal, Québec, Canada, Von Doyle’s fascination with creation dates back a long time.
A formal education in fine arts and film production at Concordia University was the catalyst for his foray into the creative world, a period during which he worked on experimental short films and works of fiction, exploring the realms of reality and imagination through the lens of the camera as his primary medium.
In the years that followed, Von Doyle’s innate entrepreneurial spirit led him to start a production company, while at the same time exploring other mediums of personal artistic expression.
With the development of NFT technology, digital art soon became his go-to medium — a medium where he felt he could express himself without incurring exorbitant costs. In particular, he recalls how he found the underground art movement liberating, as it broke the confines of physical art exhibitions and connected artists across the globe — the allure of this new world was irresistible, and Von was instantly hooked.
Finding in the Tezos platform Hic Et Nunc a community and art that resonated with his ethos, in 2021 he minted his genesis piece, “AI La baigneuse”
Aesthetic Rebellion: Von Doyle’s AI Disruption of Traditional Art
Von Doyle is captivated by the paradoxical world of beauty and nightmares that can be crafted using AI. For this reason, his preferred mediums include neural networks, deep learning, and deep dream codes, primarily using Python and PyTorch.
Aiming to achieve a dream-like psychedelic appearance, the hallmark of his work, he uses these algorithms to over-processes the images to a point of madness, before layering them in Photoshop to paint “mask” different parts of the layers until perfection. The end result: a harmonious amalgamation of colors and textures that eloquently express his deepest fears and demons.
His artistic style fuses elements of classical aesthetics with AI, delivering a potent commentary on our escalating reliance on technology, and our metamorphosis into mechanized beings perpetually tethered to screens.
To manifest this, aware of the unsettling and visually unappealing nature of computer dreams, he decided to revisit a period when painting was purely about classic beauty: the more he distorts the image, the more surreal, horrifying, and jarring it becomes, thus mirroring the uncanny essence of a computer’s “dreams”.
The end result is a body of work that vividly represents the eerie intersection of humanity and machine, layered with a hint of punk rebellion.
“J’irai comme un cheval fou” epitomizes his artistic vision, serving as a powerful testament to his talent, now captured within the Fakewhale Vault.
“And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.”
The Poetics of AI: Von Doyle’s Fusion of Technology and Humanity
By utilizing innovative neural networks, diverse codes, and intricate animation techniques, Von Doyle consistently refines his skills and broadens his artistic arsenal in the unexplored realms of AI-generated art.
It is this expedition of discovery that propels him towards creating ever more intricate, high-resolution artworks that push the boundaries of both artificial intelligence and digital art.
The use of artificial intelligence as a distinct palette by Von Doyle while preserving a deeply humanistic essence makes his work a poetic reminder of the need to channel our fears and inner demons into something positive, emphasizing that we risk spiraling into madness without such a creative outlet.
